Causes of Sweating

Finding the exact causes of sweating and 'Hyperhidrosis' (i.e. profuse, uncontrollable sweating) can be tricky. My brother and I struggled with the question for years.

In the process, we've devoured every source on the subject of excessive sweating...Books, magazines, websites, medical journals...We've even asked real surgeons that perform the 'ETS' surgery about it...

The causes of regular underarm sweating are cut-and-dry. Everybody's armpits sweat. It's a natural bodily function. The two main causes of normal sweating are:

1. Heat. Obviously if it's 100 degrees and you're wearing a rubber suit, you'll probably sweat a little : )

2. Emotional Factors. Anxiety, stress, embarrassment, etc. have a monumental impact on excessive sweating. This is a key factor for most. Even if the sweating is not primarily caused by emotional factors, it is absolutely exacberated by it.

Yea, but ummm...My Sweat's Not Regular!

First of all, 'Hyperhidrosis,' or excessive sweating is much more common than you probably think. But there is a very specific cause of the excess sweat.

So why do some people sweat more than others? There are several reasons that we've uncovered. You fall within at least one category, but probably more than one.

Causes of Sweating #1: Your Nervous System...

"Yea, I've heard of my nervous system before. I don't really know what it is. But it effects my sweating?"

YUP! Here's some cold, hard facts.

Fact #1 - Your nervous system controls the sweating function.

The nervous system is responsible for many vital functions, among which is regulating sweat-levels. You have to sweat to maintain homeostasis, which is a scientific way of saying balance. Sweating cools your body down when it gets too hot. But people with hyperhidrosis sweat more than they need to to stay cool. So clearly your nervous system is getting the wrong message. (Wikipedia)

Fact #2 - You don't control your nervous system consciously.

Obviously, if you had conscious control over your nervous system, you could just say, "Hey, nervous system, could ya' tone it down a little on the sweating, I'm soaking wet here!" But you don't have conscious control over it.

It is, however, functioning in your body. You can't deny that. And it stops functioning immediately when you die. Can't really argue against that either. So there must be some connection between you and your nervous system. And we already know that it's not a conscious connection, so it must be true that...

Fact #3 - Your nervous system is controlled sub-consciously.

You don't notice it, but you're operating your nervous system subconsciously. It's the same with your breathing. You don't have to remember to breathe consciously. It just happens automatically, or subconsciously. This is the case with a lot of your bodily functions--including the sweating--and also a lot of your thought-patterns.

So the main cause, or controller of excessive sweating is your nervous system. But there are a lot of sub-causes, if you will...Other things that really contribute to excessive sweating.

Cause of Excessive Sweat #2: Overactive Sweat Glands.

More on overactive sweat glands soon~!

Cause of Sweating #3: Underlying Medical Conditions.

There are a host of medical conditions and prescription drugs that can cause excessive sweating. That's why it's important to see a doctor about excessive sweating.

Another common cause which is technically a medical condition is obesity or excess body fat.

Cause of Excessive Sweat #4: Hereditary Predisposition.

It's very common for excessive sweating to run through familial lines. Hey, just look at me and my brother

Cause of Sweating #5: Products You May Be Using.

That's right. It's not a typo. There are a hodge-podge of different things that contribute to the causes of armpit sweat and HH.

Some of the common ones are:

  • alcohol
  • cigarettes
  • caffeine
  • other drugs (illegal)
  • other drugs (prescription)
  • certain foods

What you should do is take a close look at anything that you put into (or on) your body consistently.

Are you taking a certain vitamin or food supplement? Do you eat a certain food all the time? Do you drink protein shakes? Have you been using the same antiperspirant forever? (It's a little-known fact that anti-Ps can be one of the causes of armpit sweat.)

Ask some questions, and pay attention.

Hey speaking of hereditary disposition, look at me and my bro in the sweaty-days...

My armpit is sweating all over Josh's shoulder

I do not sweat. I get extremely hot under the arms but no perspiration comes out. It's been this way for over 2 years and the medical field is no help.
